Special needs patients are one of the most underserved and at-risk populations in need of oral care. This population has poorer oral health outcomes, an increased prevalence of tooth decay and periodontal disease, secondary systemic conditions, and less access to preventive services compared to the general population. Special needs individuals face multiple challenges in accessing oral health services, including finding a dentist with the skills, knowledge, and comfort to manage care. Meeting this growing population's oral health care needs starts with acquiring knowledge and clinical competence at the predoctoral level.
